I want to become a police officer, how should i go about this and could you suggest possible courses that would increase my chances in the selection process?

I live in the UK and I am aware of the policecouldyou website but unfortunately the merseyside police are not recruiting at present. Is there anything else you could suggest or possible things that could make me more appealing during the application process ie. am debating whether or not to do a first aid course.

I also have a black belt in kung fu that i got when I was younger and spent 2 years in the air cadets do you think this will help me at all?

Thank you for your replys it is greatly apprieciated

How about calling the police stations in your bordering counties? Maybe they’re recruiting?

You dont really need courses to do that. Most CJ courses are for forensics/atty/stuff like that.

    thats in usa atleast

The first thing you need to do is get a High School Diploma or a GED. Once you have done that i recommend at least a two year degree in Criminal Justice or a Legal studies field, preferably a four year degree. Criminal Justice is growing very fast so a lot more departments are looking for people with degrees. So do yourself a favor and get that degree and improve your chances of advancing your career once you’ve been hired on as an officer.Whether or not you get a higher education degree, the next thing you need to do is find a department to take you on while you go to the state law enforcement academy. They will hire you however they usually won’t pay you full wages while your in the academy. Now you just have to concentrate on graduating the academy there will be a lot of physical training and studying for written tests as well as driving and firearms training. There is also a lot of memorization involved. Be prepared for a challenge.Once you have graduated for the academy you will return to the department that hired you as a full time officer and you will begin getting paid. Now you will have to learn the particular do’s and don’ts at that department do the usually rookie thing. Good luck!

My fiance just joined Manchester GMP. Hes just finished his training and he loves it! I took him well over a year to get in though from sending the application form. You get sent on a first aid course anyway so do not bother with that. Depending which you decide to join, clue yourself up on there on going operations. If your application gets accepted, you have to do lots of maths and english tests, so practise that, and you will have to do role plays, so you need to be pretty confident in yourself. You will do interviews, and they will ask why you want to be in the police, and its best to say because you want to protect people etc, be part of a big team dedicated to looking after the innocent…Here is my e mail address, if you want anymore help…DevilsAngel3000@hotmail.com

Well here in the u.s. you do not need any sort of degree or college course to become a city cop, however state and county you do have to have at least an associate degree. I could only advice that maybe you take some criminology courses to help you with all the legal terms. Look at the websites of your local departments and make sure there is NO requirment of college first.. then if there is not, then anything you do on your own will only be added bonus for hire.

You could apply to be a Community Support Officer then in a year or two you’ll get the opportunity to train as a PC. My friend is doing her PCSO training in the Met at the moment and hopes to be a PC eventually. From my experience there’s not really a need to do a criminology course to be a police officer, unless it’s something you really want to do, but being a PCSO is a good route in. If you make sure you’re in good shape and work hard you’ll be able to make it.

Get some qualifications and life experience. Kung fu and ATC have very little use in the police force, im guessing your quite young still? They will probably tell you the same. And are more interested in people with experience. Join the RAF or Army instead, get experience that way. Also, why do you want to be a Police officer? is that really the best way you can think of spending your life?

i don’t know what area you are in but my police force is greater manchester, so if i was to go on the GMP website it would have the information on there. so you could go on your local police website, enquire at the job centre. yes a first aid course would be grate, a second language is good, whsmith sell loads of information books about how to get in and pass all the police test http://www.whsmith.co.uk look under true crime and they are in there. you could get a security job or become a community patrol officer or i cant think what they are called but become a voluntary police officer i think they work a minimum 6 hours a week its a foot in the door
